Repo! The Genetic Opera finally. I remember seeing a trailer and feeling that I would love it. Everything about it screamed that it was a movie for me. I didn't expect a cinematic masterpiece, but I thought it would be a fun movie. Like
Rocky Horror or
Labyrinth. Plus I like rock opera, like
Phantom of the OperaI started to watch it and the intro was great, I was impressed by the mix of comic book panels to help with the narrative. Hell I even loved the female guards with guns and wearing fish nets.
But then the singing happened and then the story...and the first time I watched it I couldn't exactly point out why I wasn't liking it. I mean it had everything that I loved. I also listened to the soundtrack all day one day at work before watching it and I just couldn't get into the music...even though I should have. I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Then I realized (through the help of my Musical Stage Actor husband) that they weren't following a meter and didn't really rhyme. And when they did rhyme, it did feel a little forced. Like rhyming "Anatomy" and "Surgery"...how they made the lyrics, it messed with the meter and felt too forced in trying to rhyme.
But I really don't have a great ear for music. But the other thing that got me was that the story had a feeling of not flowing well. I felt lost and trying to cling on for my lack of patience was slipping.
It then hit me, they were putting all these cool concepts together, but they didn't make the scenes connect well. Like putting together a collage of all these great super cool images, but forgetting to glue them to the board before picking it up to mount on the wall - causing it to fall apart.
It was trying to be too many things at once, and lacked being original. Rocky Horror Picture Show is a bad movie, but a fun one. And even though the story isn't the best, I still find myself wanting to get up and dance when they start the "Time Warp" song. Plus the over the top crazy scenes that just make you crack up laughing.
Repo! The Genetic Opera had so much potential, a better lyricist would have probably made it a good film. And probably not having Paris Hilton in it would also help. And stop making every scene with Sarah Brightman's character in it look like one of her album covers or music videos.
I tried to like it, I mean I felt like I had to force myself to try to like it. But I just couldn't do it. I even heard my friends tell me of how bad it was and I went in it with the worst of expectations...and it still was a bad movie/musical.
I still can't remember any of the songs. And I can't get songs from musicals that I hate out of my head at times!
Those that might like this movie might be repressed kids who can't see violence/gore and haven't seen anything better. Like we all have a movie that we saw as a kid and loved it for similar reasons, then see it now and think of how horrible it is and don't know why you liked it so much.
